Week Four: Blog Project "Stranger Things" Review

STRANGER THINGS!

I chose to analyze a show I watched in the springtime, Stranger Things. I watched this through Netflix, as it streams from there. This show is a suspenseful comedy, which sounds weird but it’s a great show. I chose to analyze Episode 1 of Season 1. The show is about four friends who finish a night of games and head home, one of them goes missing under mysterious circumstances. When he goes missing, a bald girl shows up to Mikes’ (the main character) house. She is pretty weird and has powers. Millie Bobby Brown plays Eleven, the bald girl with powers, this is the first show she has been on, and YES she really did shave her head for the show and Oh Boy, she rocked it! Finn Wolfhard plays Mike, the main boy character. Wynona Ryder, a popular actress since her childhood, plays the missing boys mother and does a great job. People LOVE that this show is released so it can be “binge watched”. They love the goofy feel og the actors and the show, and they love the 80’s setting to the show. Vulture said, “To call Stranger Things a Frankenstein’s monster of ‘80s influences wouldn’t do justice to the many parts that make up this irresistible beast.” They are referring to the show and its intense suspenseful feel. This article compared Stranger Things to other movies, I’ll link it here so you can read it!
The style of this show is goofy and fun, but it’s also mysterious and serious when it needs to be. The characters are portrayed as traditional teenagers, they dress like they are in the 80’s. The music played in the show is often music from the 80’s and they place a particular stress on the song, Should I Stay or Should I Go by The Clash. This song is responsible for keeping Will motivated in the Underneath. This show reminds me a bit of The Wonder Years (older show) and the OA (a newish netflix show), but it’s far different from any other popular TV shows, which I think that is what makes this show so amazing. This shows plot is incredible and complex and once you finish a season you continue to want more. Here is a link to an article that further proves the point of Stranger Things greatness!
This shows brings out society and their need to contain and hide the unknown. It also opens your eyes to the unknown of the world and the complexity we live in. I think they often focus so much on the female aspect and even the young boys in the show have a hard time depending on Eleven until they see how amazing she is. The younger boys worry about their friend being taken away from them by a girl (which is a popular teenage worry). I think this show could have been for anybody. A preteen would enjoy it for its vintage feel and it’s plot and the older demographic would enjoy it because of its humor and its setting. The show is well rounded and great for anyone who enjoys a bit of Sci-Fi. This show kind of encompases the US culture. It shows regular families with some not so regular problems, but it just has the drama that most American families experience. This show is great, its strengths include its plot and the humor within the show, it’s definitely a parody to real life, but it has such a real feel that it makes it seem less like big joke. You become entangled with the characters and feel for them. When they hurt, you hurt and when they laugh, you laugh. It creates this amazing family feeling in the show. I honestly have nothing bad to say about the show. Even season 2 was a huge success which can be hard to do. My whole family and small group of friends has watched and binged watched this show. Everybody loves it. I do not follow it on social media, but I am awaiting the arrival of season 3. They have a twitter and an instagram, but I don’t follow it that closely. If you would like to know how many days are left until you too can binge watch season 3, here is a link! This show is incredible, here are some of the best moments, spoiler alert though! WatchMojo is a good youtube channel to go to to find the bests of! In conclusion, if you have not seen Stranger Things GO WATCH IT. It’s highly recommended and just a great show. So sit down with your favorite snacks and watch.
